The Mind

by Pastor Jim Wilson

Luke 10:27 says that we are to love God with all of our mind. Interesting thought. We usually think of love in terms of emotion, but here it is a rational action. Something that is done through reason – our mind!

Have you ever considered how much the Bible says about the mind? Paul alone mentions the mind over fifty times. -debased mind - corrupted mind - fleshly mind - blinded minds - and defiled minds.

But he also talks about the sober mind- sound mind- ready mind - willing mind - spiritual mind - and he says believers have the mind of Christ. What an incredible thought.

The Bible also says Christians are to have one mind - to have same mind - to be like-minded –. Which does not mean to lose our diversity. It means, stop battling for self-glory.

It seems the mind is an incredibly important tool when it comes to growing in the faith. The problem is, when we come to Christ we come from many different walks of life. Many different ways of thinking. Ephesians 4:17 reminds believers that we used to walk in the futility of our minds. The problem is that many believers still think the old way and that makes them act the old way. So, how do we fix this problem?

Renew your mind! Romans 12:2 says to stop acting and thinking the way the world does. Instead we are to be transformed – which means to be changed from the inside out - by renewing your mind. Change in behavior begins with a change in thinking.

Ephesians 4 tells the same story. First, renew the mind. Then put off old ways and put on new ways. In other words, Christians must learn to change how they think, before they can expect a change in behavior.

How about you? Are you loving Christ with your mind?

Now there’s something to think about!
