How to be Salt and bring flavor to the world.
I wrote last week about the Beginnings of Sorrows as it is laid out in Matthew 24. The passage is filled with warnings. Maybe a better word would be expectations. The Lord is saying as we get closer to the end, expect things like this to happen.
Like what? Expect persecution to progress to the point of hatred and assault – even death. We are seeing this progression even in our own nation.
Expect people to grow more cynical and less tolerant of each other. Expect to see betrayal on a level that is beyond reason. Expect to see people outright hate each other. Expect to see people explode in angry violence toward each other. Expect lawlessness to permeate the land. Justice to disappear. Love to grow cold.
Expect it, but do not give in or give up. Matthew 5:13 says Christians are the salt of the earth. The Lord asks the question, if salt loses its flavor how can you season it? In other words, if Christians lose their saltiness – the flavor they are supposed to use to make the world a better place – how can they be re-seasoned? Believers cannot allow themselves to become cynical, or hateful. Believers must not allow their love to grow cold. They must endure!
Colossians 4:5-6 “Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”
Evil cannot overcome evil. Hate cannot overcome hate. So, Expect. Endure. Engage. All with love bringing flavor and redemption into this world.
